In Bahasa Indonesia, ber- has an intensive function when associated with suffix -an (cf. terbang 'fly',
ber-terbang-an 'fly about in all directions', and hambur 'trikle, spread',
ber-hambur-an 'spread about everywhere'). This association with intensified activity appears in othe Austronesian languages, making the intensive function a potential semantic source for the MM (=Middle Marker).
但し,A cross-linguistic look at middle morphology,
berdandan (p.16),
berlutut (p.17),
berjalan (p.18),
berpikir (p.19),
berhenti (p.19),
berkelahi (p.104),
bergumul (p.104),
bercakap (p.104),
diri, ber- (p.120).
A student's referrence grammar of Modern Formal Indonesian
Reflections on the Indo-European Medium (1960) は見えたが,Emile Benveniste がない.
